"It takes a village to raise a tama'ita'i Sāmoa" was our theme for 2019 pageant and with this theme the Village Life exhibition in collaboration with Blak Dot Galley was born.
This exhibition was held over 3 weekends, where it showcased the traditional 'Ava ceremony, various types of Siva (traditional dance), Sāmoan musical instruments, traditional weaving processes of making handicrafts, understandings of Tatau and Malu (traditional tattoo), and feature the preparation of umu (earth oven) and sharing of Sāmoan food prepared by the aganu'u class and members of VICSAC.
Village Life was also a continuation of our celebrations of Sāmoan Language Week and anniversary of the Independence of our beautiful nation. The Miss Sāmoa Victoria Incorporated team continue to work with the Victoria Sāmoan community to present the traditional practices and ceremonies within our culture, highlighting the Sāmoan language while also providing an insight into common Indigenous practices of the Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian way of life (the people of Oceania).
After a successful program it has now become part of the Miss Sāmoa Victoria pageant campaign every year so that it gives contestants a chance to engage in traditional activities and serve the community.
